Food of the month

Today we will be examining the food of the month. This little guy is very inexpensive and very easily accessible to almost everyone. One of my favorite parts about this piece of fruit is that it is very convenient as far as time and storage, I mean it already comes wrapped and ready to eat as soon as you buy it from your local grocery store of pick it from your tree.

Don't feel hungry? no problem Oranges can store away almost anywhere but is best conserved at room temperature. A fresh orange will last anywhere between 3-4 weeks with the right conditions.

Now we get to the meat of this examination. It is common knowledge that oranges are good for us, but why are they so good for us? After examining the nutritional content of an orange, I found that it has an abundance of vitamin c, they are an excellent source of fiber, and phytochemials. As you probably already know vitamin C is responsible for strengthening our immune system. In recent years studies have associated some of the phytochemicals (hespertin, naringenin, anthocyovnin, hydroxycinnamic) with cancer fighting properties.

The most studied flavanon in oranges is Herperidin molecule. The reason, Herperindin has been shown to lower blood pressure as well as cholesterol in animal studies, and strong anti-inflammatory properties.

If that's not enough to convince you, there's more. Oranges potentially protect against cardio vascular disease. A research group by the name of CSIRO (The common wealth scientific and industrial research) reviewed 48 studies that show a strong correlation between diets high in citrus fruit provides a statistically significant protective effect against some types of cancer.

Citris appears to offer the most significant protection against esophageal, orophayngea/laryngeal (mouth, larynx, pharynx) and stomach cancers, studies showed a risk reduction of 40-50%. With all the benefits you'd have to be insane to not have an orange every now and then, not to mention the taste especially when they're in season!

You I
